Breaking Barriers: More Women Entering the Trades Sector in Australia
As Australia marks International Women’s Day this week, a new cohort of apprentices is proving that change is on the horizon. With women currently making up just 3% of the trades workforce, efforts to foster gender diversity are more important than ever.
This year, ActewAGL’s latest intake of apprentices is a testament to progress – four women and four men, starting their careers together in the energy industry. Under the guidance of Liam Barber, ActewAGL’s Apprentice Program Lead, the new recruits are preparing to train in key roles:
- Certificate III in Electrotechnology Electrician
- Certificate III in ESI – Distribution Overhead
- Certificate III in ESI – Distribution Underground
These roles are not just critical for Australia’s infrastructure but are also part of priority occupations in the clean energy sector. As a result, both the apprentices and their employers are eligible for financial assistance from the Australian Government – a move designed to support skill development in high-demand industries.
For years, our team has worked closely with government bodies and industry partners to encourage more women to enter non-traditional trades. Seeing a balanced group of men and women take this step together is a sign that these efforts are making a real difference.
There’s still work to be done, but this International Women’s Day, we want to send a clear message: women can pursue a career in any industry.
If you’re considering your options, our team is here to help – just reach out.
To all eight new ActewAGL apprentices, we wish you the best of luck as you embark on this exciting journey.
