Discovering Career Pathways While Still at School

For many students, finishing Year 12 brings an important question: what comes next?

School-based traineeships help students explore career options while continuing their education. They offer practical experience, paid employment and valuable industry skills.

For Mount Gambier student Cloe, a work experience placement helped her find a career path that felt right.

“Like many young people, she needed exposure to different industries to help identify a career that aligned with her interests, values and strengths,” said Tarah Marygold, Mas National Apprenticeship Consultant.

As part of her school’s career development program, Cloe completed a work experience placement to explore future career opportunities.

Finding a Passion for Aged Care

Cloe completed her placement with Resthaven, where she gained firsthand experience in the aged care sector.

She supported staff with daily activities and spent time assisting residents. The experience showed her what a career in aged care could look like.

“The work experience I did with Resthaven was amazing,” said Cloe.

“I loved helping people and providing them with personal care. It was incredible to hear their life experiences. I also enjoyed helping them with everyday activities while maintaining their dignity.”

The placement confirmed her interest in the industry and strengthened her desire to help others.

Turning Work Experience into a Career Opportunity

After completing her placement, Cloe took the next step.

She is now a School-Based Trainee at Resthaven. She continues her studies while completing training in Individual Support (Ageing).

School-based traineeships allow students to earn while they learn. They also help students build confidence, gain practical skills and work towards a nationally recognised qualification.

“School-based traineeships provide students with an opportunity to gain paid workplace experience, develop practical skills and build confidence while continuing their studies,” said Hannah Cerone, Career Pathways Leader at Resthaven.

“We are delighted to support Cloe on her career journey. We also look forward to creating more opportunities across our sites in the future.”
