Introduction

Sometimes the right career path doesn’t arrive when you begin your career.

After completing a business degree and spending several years working in the corporate sector, Charlie Timms realised she was looking for something different. She wanted a career that allowed her to work outdoors, use her hands and see the results of her efforts at the end of each day.

Today, Charlie is completing a Certificate III in Landscape Construction through an apprenticeship with Terra Mater Group, supported by Mas National. Her journey demonstrates that meaningful career changes are possible at any stage of life and that apprenticeships can open doors for people from a wide range of backgrounds.

The Challenge

Although Charlie knew she enjoyed practical work, making the leap into a trade represented a significant career change. After building a career in the corporate world, she questioned whether she could successfully adapt to the physical demands of landscaping and construction.

Entering a traditionally male-dominated industry also presented challenges. At 32, Charlie wondered how she would fit into an environment that was very different from her previous workplaces.

“I remember talking to my parents about it and I thought ‘you know what, I’m just going to give it a crack’,” she said. “I definitely considered that it might be hard, but I realised this is what I really want to do.”

Like many people considering a career change, Charlie had to step outside her comfort zone and back herself to pursue work that aligned with her interests and long-term goals.

The Solution

With support from Mas National (Mas) and its long-standing partnership with Terra Mater Group, Charlie commenced an apprenticeship in Certificate III in Landscape Construction. The opportunity was facilitated through the Key Apprenticeship Program, helping Charlie transition into her new career pathway.

Once she committed to the change, the process with Mas moved pretty quickly.

“It was really quick and super efficient. Everyone responded so quickly. I sent an email on a Thursday saying I’m happy to go ahead with the apprenticeship. I was booked in by Friday and at Tech School on the Monday,” Charlie said. “It was a little stressful but really exciting.”

Charlie was also connected with the Mas mentoring service (MAPSS). This gave her access to additional support and guidance throughout her apprenticeship journey.

“It’s nice to know the service is there, should you get stuck or need a little guidance. It’s also good to know it’s not just for your apprenticeship; it’s there for life stuff as well.”

The Result

Charlie has successfully transitioned from the corporate world into a profession she genuinely enjoys. What began as a leap of faith has quickly become a career she feels passionate about.

“I love going to work. I live for landscaping. Every day is a new challenge,” Charlie said. “I’m exercising all day and spending time outdoors. I enjoy working with people who are happy to have a chat as we all work towards the same end goal.”

Entering a male-dominated industry felt confronting at first. Charlie soon discovered that hard work, respect and a willingness to learn are the keys to success. She also found encouragement in seeing other women succeeding in trade careers.

“When you see other women working in trades, it is empowering,” she said. “If you put in the work, pull your weight and do everything to the best of your ability, people can see that.”

Beyond developing practical skills, Charlie has gained confidence through learning how landscape construction projects come together.

“When I was younger, my stepdad taught me how to build things because he knew I was interested in different tools. I now have the opportunity to learn how to use them properly in a work environment,” she said. “I’ve realised you can build or create almost anything, and that’s really exciting.”

Conclusion

Although becoming fully qualified remains Charlie’s long-term goal, she is focused on embracing every stage of the apprenticeship journey.

“Every day is a step closer to being qualified, but I also want to be mindful of the process,” she said. “Even being on site and around people who are qualified is a great experience. I want to make sure I slow down and enjoy it.”
