From Apprentice to Business Owner in Just Four Years
Introduction
When the opportunity of a school-based hairdressing apprenticeship was offered to Caitlin Hemsley, she didn’t hesitate to take it on. Inspired by her aunty, she knew hairdressing was what she wanted to do. Caitlin progressed to a full-time apprenticeship in 2021. Four years later, she bought her own business. “I always wanted to own my own salon. It feels like something I’m meant to do,” Caitlin said.
The Challenge
In the third year of her apprenticeship, Caitlin made a decision that would change the course of her career. Unhappy with the direction her employer was taking, she left to pursue a new opportunity at a different salon. Mas National (part of IntoWork Group) supported Caitlin throughout her apprenticeship – finding her employer, updating her contracts and offering guidance through some challenging periods. The support helped give Caitlin the confidence to make a decision that would change the course of her career.
The Solution
In the third year of her apprenticeship, Caitlin left her employer to pursue a new opportunity at a different salon. Apprenticeship consultant, Rosie McKenzie, encouraged the move. “She was nearly fully qualified, but I felt she could really thrive in a new environment. Caitlin has always had drive and a clear vision of success. The new salon gave her more responsibility and eventually the opportunity of a lifetime!”.
The Results
A few months after starting at the new salon, she was offered the opportunity to buy the business. She is now the proudly busy owner of Lyneham Hair.
“I think it’s so important to have good support around you,” Caitlin said. “If you’re not supported as an apprentice, it can feel quite lonely, like no-one’s hearing what you’re saying. I was lucky to have so much support around me, which really helped me feel confident about the decisions I’ve made.”
The new year brings an exciting new challenge for Caitlin. She has welcomed her first apprentice, Maddie, into the business. As Mas clients, both Caitlin and Maddie are supported by the Mas Achieve Program, with access to an experienced team of mentors to guide them through their apprenticeship journey.
For Caitlin, becoming a first‑time employer also means ongoing support from Rosie and the Mas team, making sure she has the knowledge and resources to build a positive and successful training environment.
“In the hairdressing world, some girls can be quite mean,” Caitlin said. “I feel like I’ve learnt how to treat an apprentice the right way. I’m responsible for someone else now. Instead of just being responsible for one small area, I’m responsible for someone’s future”.
Conclusion
Caitlin’s next goal is to complete her barbering qualification and eventually buy a barber shop. She’s hopeful Maddie will join her on that journey. “I think it’s always good to have an apprentice with you. We go into this together. We’ll grow together and I think that will make us stronger.”
