From Mock Interviews to Mechanical Mastery: Harley’s Path to Success

Introduction

When Mas National (Mas) Apprenticeship Consultant Jill Wedmaier met Harley, she saw his potential and a pathway forward. Jill was helping support the Fraser Coast Jobs Ready Program by conducting mock interviews and promoting the benefits of apprenticeships. The Jobs Ready Program is designed to upskill, build job readiness and provide intensive support to people seeking employment.

The Challenge

There was no doubt Harley needed some guidance, but his enthusiasm and drive were undeniable. He knew he wanted to work with cars, and with a little support and good connections he built the belief that he could get there.

Jill saw he was keen and encouraged him to reach out once he had his full driver’s licence, promising to connect him with a local employer.

“It hasn’t always been easy for Harley. He’s had his challenges. But he got involved with some good people at the right time in his life and now he’s making a real a go of it.” Jill said.

The Solution

True to his word, Harley contacted Jill the very day he got his licence, so Jill introduced him to Clinton from Back in Motion Mechanical. Harley started off as a labourer in the workshop and soon progressed to light vehicle mechanical apprentice supported by training at TAFE QLD.

The Results

Harley says he’s grateful for the support he got from Jill and the Jobs Ready Program. After 12 months with Back in Motion, he feels confident he’s landed in the right place.

“I’ve always had a passion for anything to do with anything with a motor,” he says. “And being given the trust to work on a car that somebody doesn’t know how to fix, and being able to fix it, it’s pretty cool.”

Conclusion

Jill’s support didn’t end with the initial introduction. She continues to check in on Harley and Clinton every few months, ensuring that both are thriving. The feedback has been overwhelmingly positive.

“Harley is making great progress.” Jill says. “With the right guidance and a bit of encouragement, young people like Harley can turn their passions into successful careers. The Fraser Coast Jobs Ready Program and Mas National are proud to be part of that journey.”
