How a Trails Program Supported Harry on His Journey to Success
Introduction
In the heart of Adelaide’s foothills, a young man named Harry Hill found a path to healing and personal growth through an innovative program called TRAILS. At just 19 years old, Harry has faced more challenges than most people his age, including becoming a father at 15 and battling Major Depressive Disorder (MDD). Despite these obstacles, Harry discovered a sense of purpose and community through his involvement with the Mas National’s TRAILS team, a program designed to support at-risk youth.
The Challenge
Harry Hill’s journey began at the age of 15 when he became a father. This early responsibility forced him to mature rapidly, but it also brought significant emotional and psychological challenges. On top of his new role as a parent, Harry struggled with Major Depressive Disorder (MDD) and found himself associating with the wrong crowd during high school. These factors led to a decline in his academic performance and overall well-being.
Despite moving to Flexible Learning Options (FLO) to seek a more supportive educational environment, Harry continued to face significant challenges. His FLO case manager recognised his lifelong passion for motorbikes, BMX cars, and motors and suggested he join the Mas TRAILS program. This program, facilitated by Mas National and run by Lighthouse Youth Projects (LYP), is specifically designed for young individuals aged 16 to 24 who are at risk of entering the youth justice system in Adelaide.
The Solution
The TRAILS program offered Harry a unique blend of physical activity, skill development, and mentorship. For two days a week, he and other participants engaged in hands-on activities such as building bike trails, maintaining bikes, and caring for parklands. These activities were not only physically rewarding but also served as a foundation for developing essential life and career skills.
However, the program’s impact extended far beyond the physical. Harry found that TRAILS provided a supportive and structured environment that helped him stay out of trouble. The team’s zero-tolerance policy for negative behaviour pushed him in the right direction, and the camaraderie among participants fostered a sense of belonging and mutual support.
The latest findings from the Australian Bureau of Statistics reveal that Australians aged 16 to 24 experienced the highest proportion of mental disorders lasting at least 12 months between 2020 and 2022. Recognising this alarming statistic, Mas First Nations Engagement Advisor Peter Tucker emphasised the program’s broader impact. “Through the TRAILS Program, we have witnessed a profound transformation in at-risk kids that extends far beyond the physical act of building trails and maintaining bikes. It is a journey that not only shapes their outdoor skills but also nurtures their mental well-being. The therapeutic power of nature, combined with the camaraderie and support of their peers, fosters a positive mindset, boosts self-esteem, and instils a newfound belief in their own potential,” Peter said.
The Results
The TRAILS program had a profound impact on Harry’s life. He is now working full-time as a domestic scheduler for Thomas Foods in Lobethal, exporting mutton and lamb. This job allows him to support his young family, a goal he might not have achieved without the program’s support. “While I got this job on my own accord, the TRAILS program did help me as it showed my employers I could keep consistent at something. Thomas Foods decided to give me a chance,” Harry said.
The program also provided Harry with a supportive network of peers who shared similar challenges. “I was really struggling with my own problems being a new father without support, but through the TRAILS program, I really connected to the boys on a real personal level. They all came from different backgrounds and had so much insight into fatherhood themselves. They have helped me with everything in my life,” he added.
Conclusion
Harry’s story is a testament to the transformative power of the TRAILS program. By combining physical activity, skill development, and a supportive community, the program has helped him overcome significant personal and mental health challenges. Harry’s success not only highlights the importance of such initiatives but also serves as an inspiration to other young individuals facing similar struggles.
For anyone considering the TRAILS program, Harry’s advice is clear: “I’d say to anyone to give it a go and there is no harm in trying. As I said, like, the boys are very forthcoming and helpful in any and every way. If one of the boys doesn’t know, they know someone who does.” The TRAILS program continues to make a difference in the lives of at-risk youth, offering them a chance to reclaim their futures and build a brighter tomorrow.
