How an Electrical Apprenticeship Helped Charlie Re‑Engage With Work and Purpose

Introduction

Growing up in a rural community near Mount Gambier in South Australia, Charlie Bellman reached a point where traditional schooling no longer felt right for him. As a result, by the beginning of Year 11, he disengaged and ultimately left school.

At the time, Charlie was unsure of what to do next. Moreover, with limited local opportunities available, he struggled to see a clear path forward.

The Challenge

After leaving school, Charlie found himself without direction or purpose. Initially, spending time at home felt manageable. However, days quickly turned into weeks, and the lack of routine soon began to take its toll.

“I was just at home every day, doing nothing,” Charlie said. “I didn’t really think about it at the time, but looking back, it wasn’t a great place to be.”

Without a clear pathway forward, Charlie risked remaining disconnected from education and employment. Consequently, his confidence and motivation began to decline, making it even harder to take the next step.

Fortunately, a turning point came when Charlie’s neighbour, Brendan Marshall, owner of Supreme Electrical, offered him the chance to complete two weeks of work experience. Charlie accepted immediately, hoping it might lead somewhere positive.

From the very first day, the impact was clear.

“I loved it straight away,” he said. “All the work is kind of fun.”

Importantly, this short placement provided more than technical exposure. It also gave Charlie a renewed sense of purpose, structure and belonging.

The Solution

Recognising Charlie’s enthusiasm and potential, Brendan soon offered him a full electrical apprenticeship. With support from Mas National (Mas), part of the IntoWork Group, Charlie was able to formally sign on as an apprentice.

Throughout this process, Mas supported Charlie with:

  • Understanding the apprenticeship pathway
  • Enrolling in TAFE training
  • Knowing what to expect both on and off the job

In addition, Mas connected Charlie with its Mas Achieve mentoring program, which provided ongoing guidance, encouragement and accountability.

“Tarah from Mas explained everything, what I’d be doing, how it all works,” Charlie said. “She was really helpful.”

As a result, Charlie felt supported rather than overwhelmed, which made settling into his new role far easier.

The Results

Since starting his apprenticeship, Charlie’s routine, and outlook, has changed significantly. Most noticeably, his daily structure has improved.

“I’m up at 6:30 every morning now,” he said. “I used to go to bed at 6:30 in the morning and wake up in the afternoons. That was bad. It’s a much healthier rhythm now.”

Not only has Charlie’s wellbeing improved, but his motivation and confidence have also increased. In fact, his employer noticed a transformation almost immediately.

“In just two weeks, Charlie was a completely different young man,” Brendan said. “It’s been incredible to see how focused and motivated he’s become.”

Furthermore, Charlie is now gaining hands‑on skills, learning on the job and discovering that practical work suits him far better than classroom‑based learning ever did.

From an employer’s perspective, the apprenticeship has also delivered strong results. The team at Supreme Electrical values Charlie’s attitude, reliability and willingness to learn.

“The team is glad to have him on board,” Brendan said. “We know he’s got what it takes to become a great electrician.

Conclusion

For Charlie, one opportunity made all the difference.

“If it wasn’t for this chance, I’d probably still be at home right now, doing nothing,” he said. “I’m a lot happier now. I’ve found some drive and motivation.”

As he continues working toward becoming a fully qualified electrician, Charlie’s story clearly demonstrates the impact of early intervention, supportive employers and well‑structured apprenticeship pathways. Ultimately, it shows how the right support at the right time can help young people reconnect with work, and build a future they can look forward to.
