How TasNetworks is Using Apprenticeships to Help Power Tasmania
Introduction
TasNetworks, Tasmania’s leading energy provider, continues to invest in workforce development through its partnership with Mas National (part of the IntoWork Group). The company recently welcomed nine new apprentices and two trainees, while 61 existing employees are further developing their skills. This marks a significant step in their commitment to fostering local talent and improving service quality across the region.
The Challenge
TasNetworks faced a significant challenge in the form of a lack of local talent and service quality. The energy sector in Tasmania has been grappling with a skills shortage, which could impact the delivery of safe, reliable, and sustainable energy solutions. To address this, TasNetworks has been actively investing in workforce development.
Katrina Ailwood, Early Careers Specialist at TasNetworks, expressed her excitement about the new cohort. “We are excited to welcome the 2025 cohort of apprentices this year. The cohort is based across the state, from Queenstown on the West Coast, Smithton on the Northwest, to New Norfolk in the South. This represents a significant investment in the future of our community and our company. Partnering with Mas National has allowed us to streamline the recruitment process and bring on board talented individuals who are eager to learn and grow,” she said.
The Solution
To address the skills shortage and enhance service quality, TasNetworks is using apprenticeships to develop skilled apprentices and technicians. The new apprentices will receive extensive training across various technical and safety-focused disciplines, preparing them to excel in their roles. TasNetworks is also investing in ongoing learning for existing employees, demonstrating their commitment to continuous support and development opportunities.
Supported by Mas National’s (Mas) Experience team in Tasmania, the apprentices will embark on a journey to complete Certificate III in ESI – Distribution Overhead. This comprehensive training program will equip them with the necessary skills and knowledge to excel in their roles.
Malachi Taurins, Business Consultant at Mas National, highlighted the mutual commitment to developing skilled technicians and apprentices. “Supporting TasNetworks in this venture has been incredibly rewarding. It’s great to see so many young talents embarking on careers that not only contribute to their personal growth but also significantly benefit the broader Tasmanian community,” he said.
“Our goal at Mas goes beyond just apprenticeships; we are dedicated to ensuring that Australians are well-supported in various capacities.”
The Results
TasNetworks is confident that the addition of these new apprentices will enhance their capability to deliver safe, reliable, and sustainable energy solutions to all Tasmanians. This initiative also demonstrates TasNetworks’ ongoing commitment to community development and economic growth in the region.
Katrina Ailwood praised Mas National for their exceptional support, noting their invaluable assistance in mentoring, funding management, and promoting women in non-traditional trades. “Mas National’s team is not only responsive and flexible but also personable and knowledgeable, making them more than just a service provider—they are a trusted partner. Our operations have greatly benefited from this partnership, and I look forward to its continuation,” she concluded.
Conclusion
TasNetworks’ partnership with Mas National is a prime example of how collaboration can address the challenges of a skills shortage and improve service quality. By investing in apprenticeships and ongoing training, TasNetworks is not only ensuring a robust future for the energy sector in Tasmania but also contributing to the broader community and economic growth. The success of this initiative serves as a model for other organisations looking to develop and retain skilled talent in their respective industries.
