Upskilling Staff with Dual-qualifications a Win-Win for Transport Canberra
Introduction
Transport Canberra is revolutionising employee development by encouraging staff to achieve dual or tri-qualifications. This approach enhances workforce skills and improves team performance.
The Challenge
Transport Canberra struggled to recruit qualified staff. The Director of Fleet Operations and Apprentice Coordinator noted a significant skills shortage in the automotive sector.
The Solution
Jayden Mackin-Noy transformed his career by acquiring multiple qualifications. He’s now a certified heavy diesel mechanic and is pursuing a Cert III in Auto Electrical Technology. Jayden believes the extra training makes him more valuable to the company and enables him to handle complex jobs.
“Having multiple qualifications has made my work easier, especially on the auto electrical side. I’ve gained more knowledge, so I don’t struggle as much as others. It also opens up more opportunities for me,” Jayden said.
Transport Canberra partnered with Mas National to offer tailored training options. The organisation covers additional study costs and provides financial incentives for employees acquiring multiple qualifications.
Vivan Sykes, Director Fleet Operations and Apprentice Coordinator, believes encouraging dual qualifications benefits both employees and the business.
“We encourage staff to pursue second and third trades. If a mechanic can work on a bus from start to finish, it’s beneficial for the business. It also allows us to reallocate staff to busy sections, making the business more efficient,” Vivan explained.
The Results
Transport Canberra staff are eager to take up further study opportunities. According to Vivan Sykes, a diverse skill set makes employees more valuable.
“When someone finishes their first trade, we’re ready to sign them up for a second. I believe in continuing education while the brain is young and fresh,” Vivan said.
Jayden praised Mas National’s support, describing the process as “effortless and smooth.” The courses have made him a more versatile employee, benefiting both himself and the company.
Conclusion
The Transport Canberra and Mas National partnership is a model for employee development. The benefits of a more versatile and motivated team far outweigh the training costs. This approach ensures the workforce is adaptable to changing demands.
