Finding Motivation Through Meaningful Work
A Young Person Searching for Direction
By the beginning of Year 11, Charlie Bellman knew school was no longer the right fit for him. Growing up in a rural community near Mount Gambier in South Australia, he struggled to see clear opportunities ahead. As a result, he disengaged from school and soon found himself at home with little direction and no plan for the future.
“I was just at home every day, doing nothing,” Charlie said. “At the time, I didn’t really think much of it. However, looking back, it wasn’t a great place to be.”
Without structure or purpose, Charlie risked becoming disconnected from education, employment and long‑term career opportunities.
A Turning Point Through Work Experience
Fortunately, that situation changed when Charlie’s neighbour, Brendan Marshall, owner of Supreme Electrical, offered him the chance to complete two weeks of work experience. Charlie accepted without hesitation. From the moment he started, however, something shifted.
“I loved it straight away,” he said. “All the work is kind of fun.”
Just as importantly, the routine made a difference.
“I’m up at 6:30 every morning now,” Charlie explained. “Before that, I was going to bed at 6:30 in the morning and waking up in the afternoons. That wasn’t healthy. Now, everything feels much better.”
Support That Turned Opportunity Into a Career Pathway
Soon after, Brendan offered Charlie a full electrical apprenticeship. With support from Mas National (Mas), part of the IntoWork Group, Charlie officially signed on as an apprentice and gained a clear understanding of the pathway ahead.
Importantly, Mas National helped Charlie navigate the apprenticeship process, including TAFE training requirements and long‑term career options.
“Tarah from Mas explained everything, what I’d be doing and how it all works,” Charlie said. “She was really helpful.”
As a result, Charlie felt confident moving forward and supported as he transitioned into full‑time work.
Positive Outcomes for Apprentice and Employer
Charlie does not regret leaving school. Instead, he feels grateful to have found an alternative pathway that suits him far better. Likewise, his employer has seen a noticeable change.
“In just two weeks, Charlie was a completely different young man,” Brendan said. “He’s become focused and motivated. The team is glad to have him on board, and we know he’s got what it takes to become a great electrician.”
Meanwhile, Charlie is clear about his goals.
“I’m looking forward to being a fully qualified sparky,” he said. “If you start an apprenticeship, you should see it through. I’m learning far more hands‑on than I ever did at school.”
One Opportunity That Made All the Difference
Reflecting on his journey so far, Charlie understands how significant that first opportunity was.
“If it wasn’t for this chance, I’d probably still be at home, doing nothing,” he said. “Now, I’m a lot happier. I’ve found motivation, purpose and a future to work toward.”
Ultimately, Charlie’s story highlights how meaningful work, supportive employers and the right apprenticeship support can help young people re‑engage, build confidence and create lasting career pathways.
