Trying to stay ahead of the game in an industry that is forever changing
MCCA is focused on providing care services for frail, older people and younger people with moderate to severe and profound disabilities. With over 70 volunteers, they offer transport, home maintenance, social support, and domestic assistance services in Devonport and its surrounds.
As a growing not-for-profit, MCCA needed focus and direction for their business. Within the organisation, there had been increased interest in a social enterprise model of operation – however, they were uncertain of how to grow in this direction.
Utilizing the power of Social Media
Through Mas Mentoring’s Mentoring Business program, they were able to work with a mentor who identified two key areas for improvement. The first was social media marketing and ecommerce, with the second being creating a more sales and team-orientated approach for the organisation. More specialist support was brought in – with two visits from a sales-orientated mentor, one visit from a social media marketing mentor, and three from the original mentor focused on their general direction.
Through their work with the sales mentor, MCCA began to develop a fee-for-service approach for its operations – paving the way for a shift to a social enterprise model. With the social media marketing mentor’s advice, they overhauled their digital presence and became significantly more active in engaging their audience online. Through their work with the mentors, MCCA began to build a capacity for more economically-viable commercial community care work over its previous focus on domestic care.
Together with the original mentor’s work on shifting MCCA’s strategic posture toward a social enterprise approach, these specialist mentors helped the organisation to grow. The organisation is now able to employ three full-time employees. They have engaged their mentor as a coach on an ongoing paid basis.
As they prepare to make the final shift to a social enterprise model, the organisation is now exploring the possibility of appointing an advisory board through a fee-for-service structure. As a result of MB, MCCA has grown to pay community-minded locals for their work, assist more clients, expand sustainably as an organisation, and pay a coach for their time.
Despite being a regional community organisation, their access to Mas Mentoring has enabled them to put in place innovative practices to grow sustainably.
