Adapting to change: The positive and negatives

Change is inevitable, growth is optional
Humans, as a general rule, tend to be creatures of habit. This inclination can have emotional implications when we are faced with changes in the workplace. However, it is crucial to adapt to change, as our lives and the world around us, including our professional environments, are constantly evolving. To assist you in managing anxiety related to change, here are some helpful tips:
- Challenge your interpretations: When confronted with workplace changes, make a conscious effort to avoid assuming the worst or jumping to negative conclusions. For instance, in an Apprenticeship or Traineeship, a change could involve being assigned additional tasks or unfamiliar work.
Consider the following examples of positive and negative automatic thoughts or assumptions in such a scenario:
Positive:
- A change in my work responsibilities indicates that I am progressing towards full qualification.
- My boss must believe in my improvement and trust me to take on more responsibilities.
- This presents an excellent opportunity for personal growth and expanding my comfort zone.
Negative:
- My boss is aware that I lack knowledge in this area, and they are probably trying to punish me because they dislike me.
- I must have performed poorly in my previous tasks, which is why they have assigned me to something different.
- I will never be able to learn this new task, and they will become frustrated and terminate my employment.
Your thoughts have a direct impact on your emotions, which, in turn, affect your mood, motivation, and communication. Consider which type of thoughts would be most beneficial in this situation. It is crucial to choose your thoughts wisely.
- Maintain a positive outlook: Embrace change as an opportunity for personal and professional growth. Remember that change often leads to new experiences and learning opportunities. By adopting a positive mindset, you can navigate through your training journey more effectively.
- Question your assumptions: If you are uncertain about any new changes, don’t hesitate to ask questions and seek clarification from your employer. Challenging your assumptions and seeking information will help you better understand the changes and alleviate any concerns or anxieties.
- Seek support when needed: If you find yourself struggling with anxiety during your Apprenticeship, reach out to Mas National (Mas) for mental health support. Our In Training Support (ITS) team consists of field mentors and qualified counsellors who are dedicated to assisting you.
Remember, change is inevitable on your training journey. By maintaining a positive attitude, viewing change as an opportunity for growth, questioning assumptions, and seeking support when necessary, you will be able to expand your comfort zone and thrive in your professional development.
